Labels vs. Folders
Gmail uses labels instead of folders to organize your mail and provide you with a lot more flexibility.
A label is a tag that can be added to every email you receive or send. Apart from these, it’s also possible to add labels to a draft email.
Using labels help keep your inbox organized. They are similar to how folders work in a traditional email. However, unlike folders, you can apply more than one label to a single message. It is possible to add up to 500 labels to an email.
It’s also possible to change the color of a label. Color coding these enables to quickly tell which emails are important, especially when used in conjunction with filters.
Google has made it possible to search for emails tagged by multiple labels. This is extremely useful; for example, we may want to find any emails tagged with 'Marketing' that are also tagged with 'Client X'.
With this feature, you don’t have to search through a 'Marketing' folder that contains notes for every client since the beginning of time. This feature eliminates the amount of inbox scanning you need to do when searching for an email, saving you a great deal of time.
**Note: If you delete a message, it will be erased from every label that it’s attached to and your entire inbox.**
